numbers since president obama has taken office and there you see kind of the track. and we are september 12 there at the end. and headed in the right direction if you're president obama's campaign politically, but what about inside the numbers economically. let's bring in our panel, steve hays weekly standard. charles lane, washington post and syndicated columnist, charles krauthammer. charles? >> well, the numbers are tricky because when you get a drop in the rate and then you get this anemic job-- anemic increase in the numbers of jobs, they contradict each other. the reason that you can these contradictions, each of them comes from a completely different survey. the anemic rise in new jobs comes from the survey of employers and it's a huge and vast survey. where one out of every three employers is collected. whereas the unemployment rate comes from the survey of households where it's only 6/10 of 1% of 1% of all households are being surveyed. so, you've got a very small sample. it doesn't mean that one is right and the other is wrong, but it could mean that the second one where you ha

people were looking for work today as when mr. obama became president, that number is consistent with my computations. it's important to recognize that this month the household survey for which unemployment rate is computed as opposed to the jobs count and enterprises indicated that about 800,000 people found jobs. that's about 6% increase in the number of people employed, which is an absurd number. no one can believe we have a 135% annual growth rate in employment with the economy growing so slowly. what it appears is a lot of folks out of work have established home-based businesses and they're working on some kind of part-time basis. a reporter that lost his job working as a stringer or something. i don't view the 7.8% as encouraging at aall. >> we've been talking the last few weeks about poll truthisms. maybe not accepting they're ahead in the poll. today we learn about something to call bls truthism where we have republicans and romney supporters openly saying there's numbers are cooked. i want to put a couple tweets on the screen from earlier today. jack welch said unbelievable job

president obama use these better than expected job numbers to recover from a lackluster debate? >> yes, and i think he is depending on it. it is not so much the exact 10th of a percentage point that makes a difference to people. it is how they feel about the figures. are they less worried now about losing their jobs, losing their health care perhaps, unable to pay off their college loans? do they feel more confident or less confident? do they feel the country is heading in the right direction or the wrong direction? naturally, do they feel that president obama is doing a good job or a bad job? these figures set things on a good path. it is hard to see this as bad news. >> mitt romney has based his whole campaign on the economy being weak. how does he respond? >> weekly. . we -- weakly. in every speech so far, he has said unemployment has been above 8%. that was his best line, and it was true, but now he cannot say that. what i imagine he will say is that these are not the true figures. the unemployment figure does not include those people who have given up looking for jobs, and there a

sort of change that debate narrative and obama won it and then these numbers come out, people already starting to talk about the race being over. i think it would be even more significant. so just really points up how big that debate performance of romney was to overcome all this news that's been working against him for a while now. jenna: that is interesting painting that other scenario if it didn't happen that way but it did. in the news cycle over next several days, does it wipe out the debate performance by the president because these new numbers look more positive than expected? >> doesn't wipe it out. romney would much rather have these 8.3 and rising and the 7.8% does talk, let him talk about you who the recovery's moving apace. the more significant thing, jenna, though is what the polls were saying before any of this. suddenly we were seeing 57% of americans starting to say that they thought the country was in recovery. only 43% thought it wasn't. there is a real feeling out there, for whatever reasons that the economy is recovering. this little piece of news here may

something that president obama is going to tout. if you look underneath those top line numbers, we see that the rate of job growth is decelerating, not accelerating. that's a bad trend. you have a lot of people who are now counted as employed who actually took part-time jobs when they were looking for full-time jobs. and we continue to see people taking themselves out of the labor market. they're just giving up. we see manufacturing jobs now declining. so there's a lot of tough stuff underneath the headline number, but politically speaking, president obama is going to trump at the headline number, and mitt romney will try and talk about the fundamentals, and i think the facts are on governor romney's side, actually. >> so from one conspiracy to soot. we want you to listen to this. sticking with the economy and jobs, listen to what governor martin o'mally had to say about why things are not moving in the right direction. >> they want to slow the economy before the election. if you don't believe that, then i have a bridge i want to sell you in brooklyn. that is what the republican obstruction

suspicion is that that's a very impressive number by president obama, and while he was, in essence, his cash on hand began to dwindle starting in may had he spent all the money on tv, this is going to get way in the weeds, but it's very important. if you're obama or romney, the money that you have in your own campaign treasury is the money most easy to spend with the biggest impact, and you're guaranteed, if you're obama or romney in getting the lowest unit rate, the lowest cost for the a tv spot buying from a tv station. outside groups like american crossroads have to pay a premium. president obama spends a dollar, we have to spend more than a dollar to get the same weight of television. a lot more of romney's money is found in the wallet of the republican national committee, and smaller money is found in the democratic national committee. what's that mean? if you use money from the democratic or republican national committees, you have to use what are are called combo ads in which you not only mention obama, but also democrats, or not just romney, but other republicans. it weaken
